Even After All: Finley Quaye

EVEN AFTER ALL - A prophetic song reflecting the course that Finley Quaye's life would take, from its release when he was just 23, through to current circumstances as a 'fallen star', fading into obscurity.

In March 2024, Finley Ellington Quaye McGowan, with half-Scottish, half-Ghanaian roots, turned fifty and the documentary is an ode to the highs and lows of the life of a ‘gifted and troubled star’. The title poses the question of whether he, even after all he has been through, can rise again, and enter the industry anew, to scale global heights and provide the world, once again, with his musical genius.

Tracking Quaye down is intended to form part of the documentary and will take its cue from the music documentary 'Searching for Sugarman' (2012) Directed by Malik Bendjelloul.

Those in Peril & Vicous Circle

Those in Peril: A novel by Wilbur Smith telling the story of Hazel Bannock, a billionaire oil tycoon, whose daughter, Cayla, is kidnapped by Al Qaeda pirates off the coast of Somalia. Hazel's only hope is former SAS member, Hector Cross, an expert in surveillance, infiltration, and combat. The book is a nail-biting tale of adventure that brings Wilbur Smith's matchless storytelling to bear on the violent, ruthless world of twenty-first-century piracy.

Vicious Circle: When Hector Cross' pregnant wife is shot, he believes the terrorists who nearly destroyed his life have returned to finish the job now he has so much more to lose. But as he follows the trail across the globe a new more terrifying battle begins.

Can he save those he loves – or will he pay the ultimate price for someone else's mistakes?

Film Adaptation: The writer, Danielle Parkinson, was formerly a Maritime Security Operations Manager and Intel Officer, working with ex-members of UK Special Forces, Royal Marines and the SBS, in high-risk areas of maritime trade. These debut on-spec scripts drew on these experiences, in adaptations of Wilbur Smith novels on contemporary Piracy themes, for ReelArt Media (Producers of Slow Horses, The Favourite, The Hitman’s Bodyguard).

Research

As the research process for feature film and TV Productions are a crucial part of pre-production and production, we are keen to help makers create an authentic, compelling, and well-structured story. Whether you're making a historical drama, a science fiction film, or a biographical piece, research is essential to ensure that the film resonates with audiences and maintains accuracy.

The research process for a feature film is multifaceted and requires a balance of creative exploration and factual accuracy. By thoroughly researching the historical, cultural, emotional, and technical elements of your film, we can create as rich, immersive, and believable a world as possible for your audience. Collaboration with experts, subject matter consultants, and thorough fieldwork result in a more authentic film, leading to better storytelling, credibility, and audience connection.

Please get in touch for a breakdown of the research Pearl Pictures can conduct for your productions.

For Visual and Physical Research, including Location Scouting, Costumes, and Set Design, please see the 'Locations' section.

CLOSE X

Locations

Pearl Pictures is equipped to provide Location Scouting Services, Costume Research and Set Design Research – which might involve visiting museums, historical sites, or working with a costume designer who conducts their own research, or to investigate architectural styles, objects, and interiors that are consistent with the time period or setting. Contracted Design teams can work with our Historical Advisors to get as much detail as possible to match the world of your production.

We also draw upon Immersive Research Techniques

Fieldwork: For location-based films in particular, this can be invaluable. Visiting the location, talking to locals, or spending time in a setting similar to your story allows us to provide insights that books or interviews may not.

Experiential Learning: We can facilitate specific training or activities relating to your story. For example, if a film involves skydiving, actors - or stunt cast - might undergo training to experience the activity firsthand and the Southwest has a range of high-standard and competitive offerings.
